Fifth/Sixth GradesAs in fourth grade, students in fifth and sixth grade are no longer separated by first or second language. Students at this level have achieved enough fluency in both languages to be grouped together heterogeneously all the time. Teachers schedule the day/week/month so that 50% of instruction is in Spanish and 50% is in English. Themes studied in fifth grade social sciences include Native American Civilizations, Explorers/Colonization, 13 Colonies/American Revolution, and Constitution/Governments; while science topics include atoms and elements, human body, digestion and organs, photosynthesis and transportation of materials and nutrients in plants, water cycle, weather patterns, and solar system. Sixth-grade social science topics include Seven Continents, Early Humans, Ancient Mediterranean (Egypt, Greece, Sumeria, Rome), Ancient India, China, and Ancient Meso-America;Earth. The sixth-grade science topics include plate tectonics, heat and the sun. Our bilingual, biliterate fifth & sixth grade students are responsible role models for the younger students and for the entire community. Sixth-grade highlights include overnight camping at Rancho Alegre http://www.ranchoalegre.org and the graduation ceremony in June. |
