Fourth GradeIn fourth grade students are no longer separated by first or second language. Students at this level have achieved enough fluency in both languages to be grouped together heterogeneously all the time. Teachers schedule the day/week/month so that 50% of instruction is in Spanish and 50% is in English. Science themes studied include Matter & Energy, Natural Resources/Nature’s Findings, and Ecosystems/Living Things. Social Science topics include Journeys, Native Americans, Missions, Gold Rush, and Portraits of the U.S. Fourth graders continue developing their bilingual skills and are encouraged to think about attending college while participating in the CAL-SOAP “I’m going to college” program http://www.sbcalsoap.org that culminates with a trip to UCSB. Parent volunteers are welcome on that and every fieldtrip as well as in the classroom. |
